What to see and do in Codo

Codo
Village
Codo is a municipality in the Campo de Belchite, in the province of Zaragoza, with 204 inhabitants (INE 2025) and 342 m above sea level, 46 km from the capital. The earliest traces of settlement date from the 6th-7th centuries, with a Visigothic necropolis at the Varella Castellar; the first documented mention of Codo is the donation of the village that James I made in 1224 to the Cistercian monks of Rueda. On 24 August 1937, during the Republican offensive on Belchite, the Tercio de Montserrat - 182 young men, mostly Catalans - resisted the advance and lost more than a hundred and forty men; that Christmas Eve, the residents were evacuated in military trucks and taken in by Republican families from Bajo Aragón. Its municipal area is now included in the regional routes of the Civil War.
Church of Codo
Monument
The parish church of Codo (Campo de Belchite, Zaragoza), dedicated to San Bernardo, was built in the 17th century on the base of an earlier Mudéjar temple, from which it preserves the tower, square in plan with an octagonal upper section. The interior, in Aragonese Baroque style, is covered with barrel vaults with lunettes in the naves and a hemispherical dome on pendentives over the crossing; on the outside, in brick, buttresses separate the side chapels beneath a triangular pediment on the entrance façade.
Festivities of Codo
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Codo, the village where on 24 August 1937 the Tercio de Montserrat held back the Republican advance towards Belchite, losing more than one hundred and forty of its roughly one hundred and eighty men; the municipal area is now included in the comarca's Civil War routes.
Festivities of invierno de Codo
Activity
Codo's winter festival is held in the village where, on 24 August 1937, the Tercio de Montserrat, a requeté unit made up mostly of Catalans, resisted the Republican advance towards Belchite and lost more than a hundred and forty of its roughly one hundred and eighty men.
Archaeological site of Codo
Nature
The archaeological site of Codo, in the Campo de Belchite, corresponds to a Visigothic necropolis of the 6th and 7th centuries located in the Varella Castellar area, where burials with modest bronze, ceramic and glass grave goods have been found. The municipality was also the scene of the Civil War: on 24 August 1937 it suffered an attack by Republican troops in the battle of the Tercio de Montserrat, in which the unit, of about 182 men, had more than 140 dead. Belchite fell shortly afterwards, on 6 September 1937, and the civilian population was evacuated on Christmas Eve of that year to refugee camps in the Bajo Aragón. Both episodes form part of the Civil War routes that run through the municipality today.
