What to see and do in Longares

Longares
Village
Longares is a wine-growing municipality in the province of Zaragoza, in the Campo de Cariñena, surrounded by vineyards of the Cariñena Denomination of Origin, with 802 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its coat of arms, identical to that of Zaragoza with the rampant lion, bears the motto “Fiel Villa de Longares,” a title granted by Philip V for its loyalty during the War of the Spanish Succession. Notable is the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, built between 1526 and 1664, with three naves of equal height and star-ribbed vaults; its tower, older than the church, dates from the late 14th century and displays Mudejar decoration in brick and ceramic. In early September, during the festival of the Virgen de la Puerta, dancers perform a paloteo (stick dance) documented since the 17th century and declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Aragón (an official tourism-heritage distinction awarded by the regional government).
Mudéjar Tower of Longares
Monument
Tower attached to the foot of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Longares (Campo de Cariñena, Zaragoza), raised in the late 14th century, before the temple to which it is joined, built between 1526 and 1664. Square in plan, it is arranged in six superimposed rooms and shows three tiers topped by a terrace; the Mudéjar decoration, whose silhouette recalls a minaret and which is a symbol of Longares, is concentrated on the bell-tower section, with raised brickwork motifs combined with ceramic pieces. It is generally well preserved.

The landscape combines garnacha terraces with hiking trails that offer panoramic views of the region.

Lamb grilled over vine shoots
Food and drink
A preparation tied to the cycle of the vine: the chops and the rack are roasted over embers of vine shoots, the firewood left by the winter pruning, which burns fast and gives the meat a brief smoking. It is one of the traditional dishes of the wine-growing towns of the Campo.
