What to see and do in Pozuelo de Aragón

Pozuelo de Aragón
Village
Pozuelo de Aragón was founded in 1245 by order of the abbot of the monastery of Veruela, on lands granted to the monastery by Alfonso II in 1181, by means of a founding charter; until the 1916 reform it was called simply Pozuelo. The abbots of Veruela also promoted, in the 16th century, the parish church of la Asunción, Gothic-Mudéjar in style, with Renaissance altarpieces attributed to the Aragonese Jerónimo Cosida. About five kilometres from the village stands the lumbrerón, a circular pastoral shelter six metres high, the largest construction of its kind in Aragón, listed in 2011 as a Bien Inventariado del Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés (a heritage-listing category of the Aragonese cultural heritage register). The municipality, with 247 inhabitants, also has an artesian well 325 metres deep, discovered in 1988, which once flowed as a spout.
