What to see and do in Ainzón

Ainzón
Village
Ainzón is a wine-growing municipality of Campo de Borja, in the province of Zaragoza, with 1,036 inhabitants (INE 2025), documented since 1121 in the time of Alfonso I the Battler. It belonged to the lordship of the Real Monasterio de Santa María de Veruela from 1453 to 1835, and in 1712 Philip V granted it the title of Most Loyal, Most Noble and Most Faithful Town for its defence of Borja in the War of the Spanish Succession. It preserves the parish church of Our Lady of Mercy, in Baroque style, with a Gothic carving of the Santo Cristo, 15th- and 16th-century mansions, the arch of San Antón and remains of the castle. It is the usual venue for the Grape Harvest Festival of the Campo de Borja designation of origin, and celebrates its festivities in honour of San Roque and the Santo Cristo.

Vineyards of the Campo de Borja Designation of Origin
Nature
The vineyards of the Campo de Borja Denominación de Origen stretch out at the foot of the Moncayo, in the northwest of the province of Zaragoza, and bring together sixteen municipalities, including Ainzón, over an area of more than 6,000 hectares. The denomination, recognised since 1977, sits on limestone soils rich in nutrients, at altitudes between 350 and 700 metres, under a continental climate with scarce rainfall. Garnacha, the area's historic variety, grows alongside tempranillo, cariñena, cabernet sauvignon, syrah and merlot among the reds, and macabeo, chardonnay and muscatel among the whites. Ainzón is home to Bodegas Ainzón, one of the denomination's certified wineries.

Sierra del Moncayo oil in the Campo de Borja
Food and drink
The olive groves of the comarca are covered by the Protected Designation of Origin Aceite Sierra del Moncayo, created in 2010, whose regulatory council is based in Magallón and which extends across the comarcas of Tarazona and the Moncayo and the Campo de Borja, in the west of the province of Zaragoza. It brings together some 2,500 small olive growers spread across 35 municipalities, with more than 2,500 hectares of olive groves and an average annual production of more than four million kilos of olives. It works mainly with the empeltre and arbequina varieties, with a minority presence of negral, royal and verdial. Ainzón is home to industry bodies and oil mills that bottle the region's oil.
