What to see and do in Magallón

Magallón
Village
Magallón is a wine-growing municipality of the Campo de Borja, in Zaragoza, 57 kilometres from the provincial capital and watered by the río Huecha. It preserves an old oil mill, a testament to the comarca's olive-growing tradition, and it is crossed by the Camino de Santiago route from Soria, also known as the Castilian-Aragonese route. Its earliest remains are Iberian, with coins from the mint of Caraví, located on the site of the present-day town; under Roman rule, the place is mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary, on the road between Turiaso and Caesaraugusta, and from that period survive remains of villas, pottery and a bronze piece now in the Museum of Zaragoza. After Muslim rule, which began in 714, it was reconquered by Alfonso I the Battler in 1119. In 2025 it has 1,108 inhabitants.

The parish church of San Lorenzo, a late Gothic hall-type single-nave temple built between 1533 and 1609 on the keep of the old castle, also venerates the image of the Santo Cristo de la Cruz a Cuestas in an 18th-century Baroque chapel, and preserves an Empire-style organ from 1805 and pieces of liturgical goldwork from the 16th and 17th centuries.
