What to see and do in Novillas

Novillas
Village
Novillas is a municipality in the comarca of Campo de Borja, in the province of Zaragoza, with 508 inhabitants (INE 2025), located on the right bank of the river Ebro, at a strategic ford, at 239 metres above sea level. In 1118, after taking Ejea and Tauste, Alfonso I the Battler conquered Zaragoza and reached as far as Novillas; the resettlement was carried out by Christians and by Mozarabs brought by the king from his Andalusian expedition in 1126, and in 1132, from the castle, he granted them a charter of liberties with the same rights as Zaragoza and Tudela. Around 1135 the town and the castle passed to the Order of the Temple, which shared possession of it with the Hospital until obtaining it exclusively in 1151; after the dissolution of the Temple it passed to the Knights of Saint John, who built a Gothic-Mudéjar palace on top of the castle.
