What to see and do in Fréscano

Fréscano
Village
Fréscano is a municipality in the province of Zaragoza, in Aragón, located in the comarca of Campo de Borja, in the lower course of the río Huecha, 3.5 km from Mallén and about 60 km from Zaragoza; it has 196 inhabitants. It is documented from 1134 and was already recorded as a town in 1287, when Alfonso III of Aragón absolved Pedro Cornel of authority over his castle, which had been given to him by Jaime I. The town centre preserves Arab features in the layout of its streets and in its adobe and rammed-earth buildings, a legacy of a population that was mostly Morisco until the expulsion of 1610. It preserves the palace of the Dukes of Villahermosa, built on a 10th-century castle, the baroque church of Nuestra Señora del Pilar and the hermitage of Santa María de la Huerta, with Gothic mural paintings from the 13th-14th centuries.

Festivities of Fréscano
Activity
Fréscano (Campo de Borja, Zaragoza) celebrates its patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Pilar from 12 to 16 October, and on 17 January honours San Antón with the lighting of a bonfire in the centre of the village and the blessing of the animals, which go three times around the saint's pillar. On Easter Sunday the village is decked with laurel branches by the quintos, while the Virgen de la Huerta is carried in procession from her hermitage to the church of the Pilar. In 2002 summer festivities were also created to replace, with better weather, those of San Antón.
