What to see and do in Tauste

Tauste
Village
Tauste, in Aragonese Taust, is a municipality of the comarca of the Cinco Villas, the southernmost of them, in the province of Zaragoza, situated in the Ebro valley, on the left bank of the river Arba near its mouth, at 267 metres of altitude and with 6,838 inhabitants (INE 2025). Ramiro II granted it a settlement charter in 1138. In 2010, excavations in the town centre brought to light an important Muslim necropolis from the early 8th century, the earliest known Islamic settlement in the Ebro valley, which places Tauste as a place of some importance in the time of the Banu Qasi. Alfonso I the Battler incorporated it into the Christian kingdoms in 1105, although it was recovered by the Almoravids in 1110, and its definitive incorporation into the kingdom of Aragon did not take place until 1121.
Church of Tauste
Monument
The church of Santa María de Tauste, dedicated to the Virgen María, was built in Mudéjar style between the 13th and 14th centuries, in brick laid in a soga y tizón bond with plaster. Its tower, octagonal in plan, corresponds to the old minaret of the mosque that once occupied the site and is one of the best-preserved Mudéjar towers in Aragón. Inside, with a single nave of three bays and a semicircular apse, the 16th-century Renaissance main altarpiece stands out, with architecture by Gil Morlanes the Younger and sculpture by Gabriel Yoly and Juan de Salas, restored in 2007. It was declared a historic-artistic monument and Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 3 June 1931.
Festivities of Tauste
Activity
The festivities of Tauste are celebrated from 20 to 24 April in honor of the Virgen de Sancho Abarca (21 April), with the Grupo de Danzantes performing the danza de Tauste, a Fiesta de Interés Turístico (Festival of Tourist Interest), and the procession of the Rosario de Cristal on the night of the 22nd.
Settlement charter of Ramiro II to Tauste
Historical milestone
Ramiro II granted a charter of settlement to Tauste in 1138 to secure the villa against Navarrese expansion and attract settlers to the bank of the Ebro. The document set out the duties and franchises of the residents and consolidated the Christian nucleus on the frontier.
Islamic necropolis of the Banu Qasi
Nature
The excavations begun in 2010 brought to light an extensive Muslim cemetery in the urban centre of Tauste, with burials of the eighth to eleventh centuries. The find demonstrates the importance of the place in the time of the Muladi lineage of the Banu Qasi.
Fullatre of Tauste
Food and drink
Sweet flatbread made with flour, sugar and egg, characteristic of Tauste and linked to the patronal celebrations. It is baked in a bread oven and cut into portions; it forms part of the repertoire of home confectionery preserved on the bank of the Ebro.
