Novillas celebrates its festival in the town that Alfonso I conquered in 1118 and resettled around 1126 with Christians and Mozarabs, granting it a charter of privileges in 1132. Around 1135 it passed to the Order of the Temple, and from 1314 to the Knights Hospitaller, who built a Gothic-Mudéjar palace on the castle.
