Mallén
Village
Mallén is a municipality of the Campo de Borja, in the province of Zaragoza, with 2,951 inhabitants (2025) across 37.42 km², built beside the Ebro on the right bank of the río Huecha, facing the Navarrese municipality of Cortes. It has historically held the titles of Most Noble, Loyal and Ever Most Faithful, granted by King Felipe V. It is identified with the ancient Celtiberian city of Belsinon, called Balsio in Roman times; its El Convento archaeological site, beside the Huecha, has yielded Hispanic terra sigillata from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Recovered by Alfonso I in 1119 and granted a charter of privileges in 1132, the town rises around a hill where its castle once stood, which served as a French barracks during the Peninsular War and was dismantled at the end of the conflict.
