The historic fountain of Mallén stands in a town built on the site of the Celtiberian city of Belsinon, called Balsio in Roman times; recovered by Alfonso I in 1119, it received a charter of privileges in 1132, and its castle served as barracks for French troops during the Peninsular War before being dismantled.
