What to see and do in Jarque de Moncayo

Jarque de Moncayo
Village
Jarque de Moncayo is a municipality in the comarca of Aranda, in Zaragoza, situated at 631 metres above sea level on the sierra de la Virgen, within the Iberian System, with 373 inhabitants. Its name, already documented in 1147 as Siarchum, comes from the Arabic šarq, meaning east; the current name, with the addition of Moncayo, was adopted in 2017. The castle, probably built in the mid-14th century by Lope Fernández de Luna, later belonged to the Urrea family and to the counts of Aranda. In its terraced orchards, cherries, peaches and plums ripen late because of the altitude, and are preserved in syrup or as compote. It once had more than a thousand inhabitants, until the mid-20th century, when a demographic decline began that continues to this day.
