What to see and do in Mesones de Isuela

Mesones de Isuela
Village
Mesones de Isuela is a municipality in the comarca of Aranda, in the province of Zaragoza, with 270 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name goes back to the Latin mansiones, 'inns, resting places', a term that alludes to the presence, already in Roman times, of establishments where travellers could spend the night, and which Arab authors recorded as Mijúnish or Mishúnísh; until the reform of municipal nomenclature in 1916 the municipality was called simply Mesones. Its parish church, under the invocation of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, preserves a polychrome wooden ceiling from the 14th century, with beams, corbels and panels decorated with coats of arms and animals, built under the patronage of the Luna family at the same time as the castle of Mesones de Isuela, which also stands in the town.

Monument
Castle-palace standing atop a rocky hill above Mesones de Isuela (Aranda, Zaragoza), built from the 12th century and rebuilt in its present form in the 14th century by the archbishop of Zaragoza Lope Fernández de Luna. It belonged earlier to the Templars, who held it from 1175, and later passed to the House of Luna and, after 1382, to the Ximénez de Urrea family. Rectangular in plan, its perimeter is marked by six limestone towers; it preserves two inner courtyards, a chapel with ribbed vaults, the Sala Mayor with round arches, and several residential rooms of palatial character, though it is now partly in ruins. It was declared a Monumento Nacional (a former Spanish national heritage designation, predecessor of the BIC) in 1931.
