What to see and do in Bronchales

Bronchales
Village
Bronchales is a mountain town in the Sierra de Albarracín, in the province of Teruel, with 465 inhabitants, situated at 1,569 metres above sea level, one of the highest villages in Spain, in one of the country's best-preserved Scots pine forest areas. Its origins go back to prehistoric man, with nearby Iberian sites such as Castillejo del Vallejo del Sordo, a 5th-century BC necropolis interpreted as a link between the Montes Universales and the Guadalquivir valley, connected to transhumance. Its clays allowed a Roman-era terra sigillata pottery workshop to be set up, on the estate known today as El Endrinal, which supplied a wide territory. The economy today rests on bottled mineral water from the pine forest and on ham-drying houses above 1,500 metres.
Church of Bronchales
Monument
The parish church of Bronchales (Sierra de Albarracín, Teruel) had a Romanesque origin, probably next to the castle and dedicated to Saint Barbara, and went through a Gothic phase in the 14th and 15th centuries. The present building, dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady, was completed between 1624 and 1689. Already in the Middle Ages, the parish priest of Bronchales was among the seven priests of the diocese of Albarracín present at the oath of allegiance to its first bishop, don Martín.
Festivities of Bronchales
Activity
Bronchales celebrates its patron saint festivities from 14 to 19 August in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción (15 August) and San Roque (16 August), a day on which the traditional "sopeta" is also held, three hours of band music and a wine fight.
The Roman terra sigillata pottery workshop
Historical milestone
The clays of the district made it possible to install in Roman times a terra sigillata pottery works that supplied fine ceramics to a broad territory. In the same municipality an Iberian necropolis of the fifth century before Christ is also documented.
High-altitude cured ham
Food and drink
At more than one thousand five hundred metres operate some of the ham drying sheds situated at the greatest altitude in Spain. The dry and prolonged cold of the sierra winter allows slow curing without resorting to climate-control installations.
Mineral water of the sierra
Food and drink
The springs of the pine forest feed a bottling plant of natural mineral water that is today one of the economic mainstays of the municipality. The water comes from aquifers filtered through the rodeno sandstones.
