What to see and do in Peñarroya de Tastavins

Peñarroya de Tastavins
Village
Peñarroya de Tastavins, Pena-roja in Catalan, is a municipality of the Matarraña, in Teruel, at 746 metres and with 467 inhabitants. The villa sits below the Tossal de la Mola, where the old castle once stood, and the settlement gradually moved down the slope over time. Reconquered by Alfonso II of Aragon in 1169, it remained tied to the lordship of Monroyo and in 1209 passed to the Order of Calatrava; its settlement was organised in 1271, when inhabitants were asked to build a wall, an oven and a mill. The title of villa was granted in 1337 by the Calatrava master Alonso Pérez, with its own juror and notary; in 1471 it obtained the privilege of an annual fifteen-day fair every 1 September. Its Baroque church of Santa María la Mayor, from the 18th century, was devastated in the Civil War.

Tastavins River
Nature
A watercourse that rises in the municipal district of Peñarroya de Tastavins, at the confluence of the Escalona ravine and the Escresola ravine, and gives its name to this town in Teruel province before flowing into the Matarraña. It also crosses the districts of Monroyo, Fuentespalda, Ráfales, La Portellada and Valderrobres, serving as a municipal boundary along many stretches. Owing to its torrential nature, the floods of the Tastavins are larger and more violent than those of the Matarraña itself. Along its course through Tertiary materials it has eroded the conglomerate strata, giving rise to place names such as El Tormassal, and at La Portellada it forms a waterfall known as the Salto de la Portellada. Along its banks traditionally irrigated market gardens survive, although the river's flow is not regulated.
