What to see and do in El Castellar

El Castellar
Village
El Castellar is a municipality in Gúdar-Javalambre, in Teruel, at an altitude of 1,275 metres and with 54 inhabitants; the río Mijares rises within its boundary. Founded around 1200, after the reconquest of Teruel, it lived off agriculture, forestry and the wool industry. Between 1950 and 1970 it suffered heavy emigration, mainly towards Barcelona, which reduced its population from 400 to 120 inhabitants. In recent years it has become known for its dinosaur footprints, gathered in a Dinopaseo from 2015, and in September 2026 a team from Teruel-Dinópolis identified at the La Tejería site a Diplodocus about 150 million years old, the first of its genus recognised outside North America. It also preserves its Baroque church of San Miguel, from the late 18th century.
