What to see and do in Formiche Alto

Formiche Alto
Village
Formiche Alto is a small municipality in the comarca of Gúdar-Javalambre, in the province of Teruel, located at an altitude of 1,108 metres, in the sierra de Gúdar, beside the río Mijares, with 156 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name, of Mozarabic origin, derives from the Latin genitive formici; in the 15th century documents distinguished between Formich Susano and Formich Iusano, medieval terms that gave rise to today's Formiche Alto and Formiche Bajo, a settlement it incorporated in 1972. It has archaeological remains of its Iberian past, and in the mid-19th century it had 309 inhabitants, according to Pascual Madoz's Dictionary; since then its population has declined continuously through emigration. Near the village, in the Estrechos de la Hoz area, there is a via ferrata beside the river.
