Gúdar
Village
Gúdar is the municipality that gives its name to the massif and the comarca of Gúdar-Javalambre, in the province of Teruel, at an altitude of 1,581 metres. Its name comes from the Arabic ġudar, hard and stony ground. It was part of the community of villages of Teruel until the provincial division of 1833, and during the 16th century its population still lived on the peña Magdalena, before gradually moving to its present location. Its mountains, covered with Spanish juniper, black pine and Scots pine, are home to wild boar, roe deer and vultures. Its church of Santa Bárbara, from the 18th century and in Neoclassical style, replaced an earlier medieval one from the former settlement of Peña Magdalena.

The parish church of Gúdar is under the patronage of Santa Bárbara and stands out within the town centre of the village that gives its name to the sierra and to the comarca of Gúdar-Javalambre (Teruel). It is a Neoclassical masonry and ashlar building built in the 18th century. The bell tower rises at the foot of the church, on the Gospel side, with two masonry tiers topped by a spire and an iron weathervane.
Festivities of Gúdar
Activity
The patronal festivities of Gúdar are celebrated on 24 June, the feast day of San Juan; an old local custom had unmarried men cut poplar branches to offer to young women as a token of courtship.
