What to see and do in Mora de Rubielos

Mora de Rubielos
Village
Mora de Rubielos is the capital of the comarca of Gúdar-Javalambre, in the province of Teruel, with about 1,750 inhabitants. It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and received the Europa Nostra award in 1983. It stands at an altitude of 1,035 metres, on the banks of the río Fuen Lozana and at the foot of the sierra de Gúdar, with a mid-mountain climate of long, cold winters. Its name comes from the Latin Maura, “town of Maurus”, and was completed as Mora de Rubielos in 1860 to distinguish it from other towns of the same name. Within its boundary lie the prehistoric sites of La Hoya Quemada, a Middle Bronze Age settlement with rectangular dwellings of masonry and clay, and the Cueva del Coscojar, with Neolithic materials and Chalcolithic burials.
Castle of Mora de Rubielos
Monument
The castle of Mora de Rubielos, one of the best preserved in Aragon and dated to 1198, stands on a hill of the sierra de Gúdar (Teruel), next to the former collegiate church and the plaza mayor. Of Muslim origin, it was conquered by Alfonso II of Aragon in 1171 and later became the scene of border disputes between Castile and Aragon; in the 18th century it was occupied by Franciscan friars. It occupies a 4,000-square-metre enclosure of irregular polygonal plan, built of ashlar stone laid in horizontal courses, with Romanesque and Gothic elements and pointed arches of Muslim influence. Inside, coats of arms of the Fernández de Heredia family are preserved. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1931.
