What to see and do in Vinaceite

Vinaceite
Village
Vinaceite is a municipality of the Bajo Martín in Teruel, at 303 metres above sea level, situated on the banks of the río Aguasvivas, with a livestock and farming economy. Its name comes from the Arabic binaa zayd, 'the building of Zayd'. It is documented since 1177, when a resident of Codo named Xenen de Binizaet is mentioned, although the site of La Bovina, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) near the town centre, reveals occupation from the early Iron Age to the 1st century BC. After the Reconquest, in 1119, the territory was integrated into the honor of Belchite, and in 1327 its lord was Juan Galíndez de Sesé. Its church of San Juan Bautista was commissioned in 1777 and completed in 1781 by the Zaragoza architect Agustín Sanz for the 10th Duke of Híjar.
Cabezo de la Bovina
Curiosity
The Cabezo de la Bovina is a depopulated Iberian settlement located in the municipal area of Vinaceite (Bajo Martín, Teruel), occupied from the Early Iron Age until the 1st century BC; its abandonment is placed around 75 BC, during the Roman civil wars. Excavations have brought to light hand-made and wheel-made Iberian pottery, Roman imports, spindle whorls, millstones and opus signinum floors. It was declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico de carácter nacional (a former Spanish national heritage designation, predecessor of the BIC) in 1931, and in 2002 the Government of Aragón reclassified it as a Conjunto de Interés Cultural (a regional heritage protection category in Aragón), archaeological zone.

The irrigation channels of the Martín and the Regallo sustain huertas of tomato, onion, green bean and borage that supply the markets of the comarca. Horticultural production coexists with the olive and fruit groves in an otherwise very arid dry farmland.
