What to see and do in La Puebla de Híjar

La Puebla de Híjar
Village
La Puebla de Híjar is a municipality of the Bajo Martín, in the province of Teruel, with 935 inhabitants, whose urban centre is divided between the 'village' and the Estación district, which developed with the arrival of the railway. It preserves a Baroque church of the Natividad from 1766, with three naves and a domed crossing. From the Estación district, in 1895, the first section of the Val de Zafán railway set out, closed in 1973 and today converted into a greenway. The village belongs to the villages of the Ruta del Tambor y el Bombo, and its drum-beating Holy Week is part of this festival, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional (Spain's national festival of tourist interest designation). Its economy is based on agriculture, with a predominance of olives, sunflowers, fruit trees and cereals, and on livestock farming, especially sheep of the Aragonese breed.
Church of la Natividad de la Puebla de Híjar
Monument
Baroque church of 1766, bearing the coat of arms of the Dukes of Híjar, who that year commissioned Agustín Sanz to supervise the works entrusted to Joaquín Cólera, a master builder born in Alcañiz. It follows the hall-church plan model, deeply rooted in Aragón, with three naves - the central one, the largest, covered with a groin vault, and the side ones with lunettes - and a central crossing covered by a segmented dome on pendentives. On the outside, the three naves share a single gabled roof, and the ensemble is completed by a quadrangular tower situated, next to the portal, on the Epistle side.
Station Quarter of La Puebla de Híjar
Monument
The Station District of La Puebla de Híjar emerged with the arrival of the Madrid-Barcelona railway line, a testament to the town's industrial heritage. Its origin lies in the station, inaugurated on 10 June 1879 with the opening of the section between La Zaida and La Puebla de Híjar, on the Zaragoza-Barcelona line, of which it was also, for years, the head of the branch line to Tortosa via the Val de Zafán. The passenger building, of notable proportions for a station of its category, consists of a three-storey central block flanked by two two-storey side annexes, with a façade of twenty-three bays. The station changed operating company several times until it was integrated into RENFE following the nationalisation of the railway in 1941.
Holy Week of La Puebla de Híjar
Activity
The Holy Week of La Puebla de Híjar (Teruel) is part of the Route of the Drum and the Bombo of Bajo Aragón, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2018 and bringing together nine municipalities in the Teruel area. It has a deep drumming tradition and has eleven of its own brotherhoods, among them those of Jesus Nazarene, Saint John and Christ Crucified. As a distinction of its own, the town awards the “Tambor de Honor”, a recognition given to political figures and people who have helped to promote Aragón or the drumming route itself. It is declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional (Spain's national festival-of-tourist-interest designation).

The Val de Zafán railway
Historical milestone
The Val de Zafán railway, also called the La Puebla de Híjar-Tortosa railway after the valley it ran through, connected the Teruel municipalities of La Puebla de Híjar and Alcañiz with Tortosa, in Tarragona, over 129 kilometres; it was part of a more ambitious project meant to reach San Carlos de la Rápita, which was never completed. On 3 August 1895 the first section, of thirty-two kilometres, was opened between La Puebla de Híjar and Alcañiz; the rest of the line was extended over several decades and did not reach Tortosa until 1942. After years of decline, it was closed in 1973 and its track was removed; today much of its route has been converted into greenways running through the Bajo Aragón and the Terra Alta area of Tarragona.
