What to see and do in Urrea de Gaén

Urrea de Gaén
Village
Urrea de Gaén is a municipality in the province of Teruel, in the comarca of Bajo Martín, with 455 inhabitants. Its name combines the surname of the Urrea, a lineage of lords documented since the 12th century, with the term Gaén, of Arabic root. It preserves remains of an Iberian settlement and a Roman villa, as well as the site of the Loma del Regadío, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It is the smallest municipality on the Ruta del Tambor y el Bombo, and its Holy Week, considered that of the last aljama of Aragon, echoes through narrow streets, covered passageways and small squares to the rhythm of drums and bass drums. Its heritage also includes the church of San Pedro Mártir and the town hall, both from the 18th century, and a Museo del Juguete.
Loma del Regadío
Curiosity
Site of a Roman villa in the middle Ebro valley, continuously occupied between the 1st and 5th centuries, associated with the Museo de Teruel. In the late 3rd or early 4th century it underwent a very intense remodelling that profoundly altered its original layout, which makes its earliest plan difficult to know today. The villa had an economic function centred on the production of oil and wine, being the foremost example of this activity in the whole middle Ebro valley and one of the four or five best complexes of this type on the entire peninsula. Proof of this is its large pressing complex, of around 300 square metres in area.

Festivities of invierno de Urrea de Gaén
Activity

Flour mill of Urrea de Gaén
Monument
The flour mill of Urrea de Gaén, commissioned by the dukes of Híjar beside the river Martín, is today practically in ruins; it had two floors, with the milling area below and the miller's dwelling above.
The Urrea lineage
Historical milestone
The place name combines the surname of the Urrea, a Christian noble lineage documented since the twelfth century, with the term Gaén, of Arabic root. The locality preserves Iberian remains and a Roman villa that attest to a much earlier occupation.
Cured meats and salted products from pig slaughter
Food and drink
The domestic slaughter left a recipe book of longaniza, chorizo, blood sausage and loin in oil that butchers and salting houses of the comarca still produce. These meat preserves accompany the migas and the winter stews.
