What to see and do in Lécera

Lécera
Village
Lécera is a municipality in the Campo de Belchite district, in the province of Zaragoza, situated at about 530 metres above sea level in the Ebro depression, near the border with Teruel, and today the second most populous municipality in the district, with 578 inhabitants. In 1520 Alonso de Aragón died in the town, archbishop of Zaragoza and viceroy of Aragon, natural son of Ferdinand the Catholic, whose remains were transferred to Zaragoza for burial. It was a seigneurial town, head in the 18th century of the Duchy of Lécera under the Duke of Híjar. It preserves the church of Santa María Magdalena, with three naves, a transept and a five-sided polygonal apse. Its patron saint festivities honour Santo Domingo de Guzmán in the first week of August, with a procession to the hermitage dedicated to him.
Parish Church of Lécera
Monument
The parish church of Lécera, dedicated to Santa María Magdalena, is the town's main architectural landmark. Built in Baroque style on a Mudéjar base, it preserves three naves with a transept and a five-sided polygonal apse closed by a dome over the crossing. The interior decoration, of Baroque stucco and sgraffito, covers almost all of the original Mudéjar elements. On the outside a four-tier tower stands out, the first square in plan and the following ones octagonal. In 1686 the chapel of Santa Cenobia was added on the south side of the crossing.

Cereal-growing tradition of Campo de Belchite
Curiosity
Tradition of dryland cereal farming in the municipality of Lécera, within the Campo de Belchite (Zaragoza), the historical economic base of the comarca. A mid-19th-century description lists wheat, barley, oats, saffron and barrilla as the main crops, together with sheep-raising and the hunting of rabbits, hares, partridges and the occasional wolf. The land, although dry-farmed, was then described as rich in groundwater.
