What to see and do in Foz-Calanda

Foz-Calanda
Village
Foz-Calanda is a municipality in the Bajo Aragón comarca, in the province of Teruel, located at 496 metres above sea level beside the Guadalopillo river, which forms the gorge that gives the town its name, between the sierras of la Galga and Peñas Blancas. In the upper part of the village stands the parish church of San Juan Bautista, a baroque masonry temple with three naves and a tower with an octagonal brick belfry; above it survive scant remains of the old castle. On the main square stand the town hall, with its entrance lonja, and the chapel of San Roque, resting on ashlar pillars. The municipality also preserves an old restored pottery kiln, evidence of the tradition that gave the village the sculptor Eleuterio Blasco Ferrer. It has 272 inhabitants.
Church of Foz-Calanda
Monument
The Baroque church of San Juan Bautista in Foz-Calanda, built of masonry with three naves, has an octagonal brick bell tower built into the façade. It stands at the top of the town, next to the scant remains preserved of the village's old castle.
Guadalopillo river plain
Nature
The Guadalopillo rises in Ejulve at 1,150 m, in the foothills of the Majalinos, and after being regulated by the Gallipuén reservoir it forms, in the Alcorisa depression, a fertile plain that irrigates the municipalities of Alcorisa, Foz-Calanda and Calanda before narrowing into a gorge and joining the Guadalope. Foz-Calanda sits precisely where the river, after fertilizing the plain, narrows between bare hills.
Festivities of Foz-Calanda
Activity
Foz-Calanda celebrates its patronal festivities on 8 and 11 August, originating from the feast day of San Pablo, including religious events and popular festivities in this municipality of the Teruel Bajo Aragón.
