What to see and do in Aguaviva

Aguaviva
Village
Aguaviva, also known as Aiguaviva de Bergantes, is a municipality of the Bajo Aragón, in the province of Teruel, at 549 metres above sea level. The Muslim territory of the valley was known from the 12th century as Kamaron, and its first settlement, Vecindell, stood on the right bank of the Guadalope river. After the reconquest, the commandery of Camarón was created, dependent on the Order of Calatrava; a document from 1319 places five Templar knights from Castellote here, whose property passed that same year to the Order of San Juan, which in 1366 ordered the construction of the first documented church in the place. Aguaviva finally became independent from La Ginebrosa in 1611. Its church of San Lorenzo, from the 17th century and Gothic-Baroque in style, lost almost all its interior heritage at the start of the Spanish Civil War.
Church of Aguaviva
Monument
17th-century church of San Lorenzo in Aguaviva, combining Gothic and Baroque style, with a three-storey bell tower of ashlar masonry topped by an octagonal upper storey; its interior was destroyed at the start of the Civil War and it now holds a neo-Baroque altarpiece.
Hermitage of Aguaviva
Monument
The hermitage of Aguaviva, dedicated to San Gregorio Magno, is a 17th-century building of small ashlar and rubble masonry with a hexagonal plan covered by a pyramidal roof; it is included on the Lista Roja del Patrimonio (Red List of Heritage) of Hispania Nostra due to its state of conservation, and preserves inside a Civil War graffito made by an international volunteer of the Lincoln Brigade during the Battle of Teruel.
Festivities of Aguaviva
Activity
Aguaviva celebrates its patronal festivities in honor of San Lorenzo, with main dates on 11 and 14 August, when music, dancing and the townspeople's hospitality set the tone of the program.
