What to see and do in Alcorisa

Alcorisa
Village
Alcorisa is a town in the Bajo Aragón comarca, in the province of Teruel, a participant in the Ruta del Tambor y el Bombo, situated at the foot of the Sistema Ibérico, between the sierra de Cantera Saso and the sierra de los Caballos, beside the Guadalopillo river. Already settled in the late Neolithic, it reached its greatest density of settlement in Iberian times, with the site of Cabezo de La Guardia as the most notable. Under Muslim rule it formed part of the Marca Superior de Zaragoza under the name Alkol, from the Arabic Al-Kura, "the farmsteads", the probable origin of its present-day name. The olive tree is its emblematic tree. It has 3243 inhabitants.
Church of Alcorisa
Monument
The parish church of Alcorisa (Bajo Aragón, Teruel), dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, began to be built in the late 14th century, although its current structure comes mainly from an extension begun in 1688. The doorway, Baroque in style, is probably the work of French stonemasons, and its 18th-century bell tower, with Mudejar echoes, stands out. It is a building with three naves with side chapels and a straight east end, the presbytery covered by a star-ribbed vault. The original altarpiece, the work of the sculptor Damián Forment, was destroyed and burned during the unrest of the Civil War. The complex was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2002. Alcorisa is, moreover, one of the towns on the Ruta del Tambor y el Bombo.
Festivities of Alcorisa

Nature

The Guadalope is the second-longest tributary of the Ebro's right bank, after the Jalón, with a length of 160 kilometres and a basin of around 3,890 km²; it rises in the Sierra de Gúdar, near Villarroya de los Pinares and Miravete de la Sierra, and is the best-regulated river in Aragon, with the Santolea, Calanda and Civán reservoirs along its course. On its tributary the Guadalopillo, which flows through the district of Alcorisa before joining the Guadalope, lies the Berge-Alcorisa reservoir.

On 14 March 1601 Philip III granted the hamlet of Alcorisa the title of Royal Villa, which detached it from its dependence on Alcañiz. In 1738 Philip V added the style of Fiel y Muy Ilustre.
Carlist fire of Alcorisa
Historical milestone
In 1836, after several failed assaults, the Carlist forces set fire to the town and burned more than three hundred houses. The recovery was slow and in 1845 the ravages of the episode were still visible in the township.
Alma cakes and almond biscuits
Food and drink
The comarca's baking preserves the tortas de alma filled with angel-hair squash jam, the almendrados, the mantecados and the tortadas. To these are added the Easter cake and the so-called tetas de Santa Águeda, tied to particular dates of the calendar.
