What to see and do in Ejulve

Ejulve
Village
Ejulve, in the Andorra-Sierra de Arcos comarca, stands at 1.113 metres above sea level with 172 inhabitants, along an irregular, narrow street plan adapted to the steep slope between the hills of San Pedro and Santa Catalina. Although geographically it belongs to the Maestrazgo, of which it is the gateway, the 2002 comarca reorganisation assigned it to Andorra-Sierra de Arcos. Its heritage, from the 16th and 17th centuries, includes the town hall, la Torre, the church of Santa María la Mayor and the ermitas of San Pedro and Santa Ana. The main festival is held on 8 September for the Nativity of the Virgin, and on 26 July Santa Ana is celebrated with a pilgrimage to her ermita. The surroundings, with a mountain Mediterranean climate and frequent snowfalls, offer sites such as the Órganos de Montoro and the cave of Recuenco.
Church of Ejulve
Monument
Church of Santa María la Mayor de Ejulve, built over an earlier Gothic temple and enlarged in 1565, with a plateresque portal from the late 16th century. It retains the tower and part of the Gothic façade, with ten chapels, some with their own confraternity. A 1938 bombing, during the Civil War, destroyed the roof and vaults, later rebuilt; the current altarpiece comes from the church of San Juan and San Pedro de Zaragoza.
Festivities of Ejulve
Activity
Main festivities of Ejulve on 8 September, for the Nativity of the Virgin, with the traditional "baptism of the Virgin" using melons and the chicken race; on 26 July Santa Ana, patroness of the village, is celebrated.
Festivities of invierno de Ejulve (San Antón)
Activity
Feast of San Antón, in the week of 17 January, in Ejulve. It is celebrated with a large bonfire in the village's plaza Mayor, in a mountain municipality where the cold air and altitude allow hams and cured meats to be cured outdoors.
Festivities of invierno de Ejulve (San Blas)
Activity
As in other villages of the comarca, in Ejulve the bonfire of San Blas is lit on 3 February, in a mountain village where the cold allows hams and cured meats to be cured outdoors.
Bridge over the Guadalope River in Ejulve
Monument
Historic bridge in the municipal district of Ejulve, in the Sierra de Cucalón.
Mountain air-cured ham
Food and drink
The altitude and the cold air of Ejulve make it possible to cure hams and sausages in natural conditions over long periods. It is one of the comarca's centers of cured-meat production and supplies shops throughout the area.
The artisan cheeses of the Sierra de Arcos
Food and drink
The goat and sheep flocks of the sierra give milk for artisan cheeses made in small workshops. They are sold fresh, young and cured, sometimes preserved in olive oil from the comarca itself.
