What to see and do in Molinos

Molinos
Village
Molinos is a municipality of 232 inhabitants (INE 2025) in the comarca of the Maestrazgo, in the province of Teruel, at 838 metres above sea level, at the meeting point of the Fuentes river and the Papel river; the main settlement sits on the upper area known as el Pueyo. In the mid-nineteenth century it had 1,279 inhabitants. Its territory contains the natural monument of the Grutas de Cristal, in the Graderas area, about 3.8 km from the village, and the Barranco de San Nicolás forms a picturesque landscape at the entrance to its steep streets. The church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves presides over the centre, dating from the late fifteenth century, with a single nave of three bays and a polygonal chancel with ribbed vaulting; it belonged to the Order of Calatrava and preserves a free-standing four-storey tower, now in poor condition.
Crystal Caves of Molinos
Nature
The Natural Monument of the Grutas de Cristal de Molinos, also called the cueva de las Graderas, occupies 126 hectares in the municipality of Molinos (Maestrazgo, Teruel), between 640 and 1,100 metres in altitude, and was declared by the Gobierno de Aragón in 2006, besides being a LIC and ZEPA. It is a complex karst system of chambers and galleries with a great variety of stalactites, stalagmites, columns and curtains, accessible through two entrances: the Grutas de Cristal itself and the cueva de las Baticambras, the latter a refuge for three species of horseshoe bats. The cave also served as a burial site: it yielded the remains known as the Hombre de Molinos, dated to around 25,000 years ago and considered the oldest human remains in Aragón, along with other animal bone remains.
Festivities of Molinos
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Molinos, in honour of Santa Lucía, are held from 11 to 15 August, with an open-air dance, young bulls and the typical summer celebrations; the village also has the bonfire of San Antón (17 January), the feast of Santa Águeda (5 February) and, in September, the music and spoken-word festival "Grutas de Cristal".
Festivities of invierno de Molinos
Activity
Molinos's winter festival is held in a village beside the 126-hectare Monumento Natural de las Grutas de Cristal, which includes the Cueva de las Graderas with bat colonies and archaeological remains.
