What to see and do in Gargallo

Gargallo
Village
Gargallo is a small municipality in the Andorra-Sierra de Arcos comarca, in the province of Teruel, set at 941 metres at the foot of a hill, in the valley of the Escuriza river, a tributary of the Martín. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad is a baroque masonry temple with three naves and an elliptical dome over the crossing, dated to 1707. The ermita of San Blas, next to the cemetery, was blown up by Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War and later rebuilt on a smaller scale. This comarca, with its deep-rooted escabeche tradition, keeps up small-game dishes of partridge, rabbit and quail with vinegar, oil and bay leaf, alongside the pork preserves left over from the matanza. It has 88 inhabitants, compared with 441 in the mid-19th century.
Church of Gargallo
Monument
Sources disagree on the dedication of the church of Gargallo: Pascual Madoz described it in 1847 under San Blas, while the current Baroque temple, dated 1707, is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Piedad. It has three naves covered by a barrel vault and an elliptical dome over the crossing; the tower, with three rectangular tiers, combines ashlar in the lower tiers and brick in the upper one, and the portal opens with a semicircular arch between pilasters, with a niche above the lintel.
