What to see and do in La Mata de los Olmos

La Mata de los Olmos
Village
La Mata de los Olmos is a small municipality of Bajo Aragón, in Teruel, in the transition zone between the valley of the Guadalope river and the Teruel Iberian System; the village stands at 905 metres above sea level, and the municipal territory ranges between 820 and 1,049 metres. In its territory lies the San Cristóbal site, with abundant Iberian and Roman pottery from the 1st century BC. In 1179 King Alfonso II of Aragon granted it to the Order of Calatrava, under whose commandery of Alcañiz it remained for centuries; it became a municipality in 1834 and its current name has been used since 1860, after previously being known simply as La Mata. Its economy today rests on livestock farming, above all pigs and sheep. It has 255 inhabitants (INE 2025).
