What to see and do in Crivillén

Crivillén
Village
Crivillén is a municipality in the Andorra-Sierra de Arcos comarca, in the province of Teruel, whose name comes from the Latin Fundus Crivillanus. It preserves a Renaissance-style town hall and the parish church of San Martín de Tours, declared a monumento histórico-artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection category, later folded into the Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1982, as well as the ermitas of San Gil, baroque, from the late 17th century, and of Santa Bárbara, on the outskirts. It is the birthplace of the sculptor Pablo Serrano, born in 1908, whose birth house is preserved and where a contemporary art centre bearing his name brings together his work and that of contemporary artists. In the mid-19th century it had 709 inhabitants, according to Pascual Madoz; today it has 92 (INE 2025).
Festivities of Crivillén
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Crivillén on 1 September, in honour of San Gil, whose Baroque hermitage dates from the late 17th century; and on 11 November, in honour of San Martín de Tours, patron of the parish church.
Church of Crivillén
Monument
Parish church of San Martín de Tours de Crivillén, in Teruel, declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection category, the precursor of the Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1982. Its existence is documented as early as the 19th century, when Pascual Madoz's geographical dictionary listed the parish of San Martín among the assets of the town, a fact that confirms its antiquity within this small settlement in the province of Teruel.
Pablo Serrano, sculptor
Historical milestone
The sculptor Pablo Serrano Aguilar was born in Crivillén on 10 February 1908 and died in Madrid on 26 November 1985. His birth house is preserved, and the village houses a contemporary art centre bearing his name, which brings together his work and that of contemporary artists. Considered one of the most important Spanish artists of the 20th century, he began his career in South America and gained international fame after settling in Spain in 1955; in 1957 he co-founded the Grupo El Paso, through which he promoted avant-garde art, alternating expressionist and abstract sculptures with a strong humanist concern for communication between people. He gained wide recognition after the 1962 Venice Biennale, and near the end of his life he founded an institution that gave rise to the Instituto Aragonés de Arte y Cultura Contemporáneos Pablo Serrano.
