What to see and do in Bierge

Bierge
Village
Bierge is a municipality in the comarca of Somontano de Barbastro, in the province of Huesca, with 243 inhabitants (INE 2025) spread between the town of the same name and the hamlets of Cheto, Las Almunias de Rodellar, Letosa, Morrano, Nasarre, Otín, Pedruel, Rodellar, San Hipólito, San Román, San Saturnino and Yaso, after absorbing the municipalities of Rodellar in 1965 and of Morrano in 1972. Situated in the north-west of the comarca, a good part of its extensive territory lies within the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara natural park, whose southern slope holds more than sixty caves with prehistoric rock art declared a World Heritage Site.
Church of Bierge
Monument
The parish church of Bierge, dedicated to Santiago Apóstol and built in Aragonese Gothic style, stands at the top of the village. According to Pascual Madoz's dictionary of 1846, the appointment of its parish priest then fell to the king or to the monastery of Casbas, whose nuns held jurisdiction over Bierge at least until 1610, a link that explains the strong monastic imprint on the village's religious life.

Nature
Southern slope of the Parque Natural de la Sierra y los Cañones de Guara, in the Somontano de Barbastro (Huesca), with more than 60 caves of prehistoric rock art declared a World Heritage Site. The park, created on 27 December 1990, covers 47,453 hectares between 430 and 2,077 metres at the Guara peak, and is crossed by the Alcanadre, Flumen, Guatizalema, Vero and Mascún rivers. On this slope, Mediterranean holm oak forest predominates, with Scots pine in the higher areas, and it preserves Upper Palaeolithic rock paintings such as those of the Fuente del Trucho.
