What to see and do in Casbas de Huesca

Casbas de Huesca
Village
Casbas de Huesca is a municipality of 287 inhabitants in the Hoya de Huesca, part of whose territory lies within the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park. It owes its name to the female Cistercian monastery founded in 1173 by Oria de Pallars with the support of the bishop of Huesca, and which in the 17th century was headed by the Aragonese-language writer Ana Francisca Abarca de Bolea; the convent, turned into a prison during the September Revolution of 1868, was plundered and abandoned by its nuns when the Civil War broke out, and was declared a Monumento Nacional (former Spanish heritage-protection designation) in 1974. The village also preserves the parish church of San Nicolás, from the 18th century, an ashlar work by José Sofí, and the hermitage of Bascués, from the 11th century, the sole remnant of a depopulated village, commemorated every second Sunday of May with a pilgrimage.
