What to see and do in Ibieca

Ibieca
Village
Ibieca is a municipality in Huesca province, in the Hoya de Huesca, between the Alcanadre and Guatizalema rivers, 23 kilometres from the capital. Conquered in the 11th century by Sancho Ramírez, it was dependent on the lordship of Foces, from which doña Godina set out to take charge of the lordship of La Almunia. Two kilometres from the town rises the hermitage of San Miguel de Foces, the sole remnant of the old settlement of Foces, a family pantheon that Ximeno de Foces had built in 1249, in the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, with wall paintings by the Master of Foces, a Monumento Nacional (former Spanish heritage-protection designation) since 1916. The church of San Clemente has the look of a fortress, with a four-bay nave. On 15 May, a pilgrimage carries the Virgen de Foces from the hermitage to the church. It has 110 inhabitants.
Church of Ibieca
Monument
The parish church of Ibieca, in the Hoya de Huesca, is dedicated to Pope San Clemente and has the appearance of a fortress, above all due to its ashlar-stone bell tower. It consists of a single nave of four bays with side chapels, added in the 17th and 18th centuries, and a Renaissance-style doorway. Its most important renovation, in 1605, was carried out by the architect Domingo Isola, who gave it much of the appearance it retains today.
Hermitage of San Miguel de Foces
Monument
A family pantheon that Ximeno de Foces had built in 1249 two kilometres from Ibieca, in the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. It holds Linear Gothic wall paintings attributed to the Master of Foces and the family tombs. A Monumento Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force until 1931) since 1916.
