What to see and do in Abiego

Abiego
Village
Abiego is a municipality of the Somontano de Barbastro, in the province of Huesca, situated partly on flat ground and partly on the slope of a hill, on the left bank of the Alcanadre river, at 539 metres of altitude and at the foot of the Sierra de Guara. It has 259 inhabitants and also includes the hamlet of Alberuela de la Liena. Its name, Al-Byego, comes from the Muslim castle that dominated the comarca of Barbitania; the town passed into Christian hands around 1095, and in the 13th century its Gothic stone bridge was built over the Alcanadre. It preserves the Gothic-Renaissance collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor, from the 16th century, one of the great heritage landmarks of the comarca, and an 18th-century Augustinian convent dedicated to San Joaquín.
Collegiate Church of Santa María de Abiego
Monument
16th-century collegiate church of Abiego, one of the great heritage landmarks of the Somontano, built in late Aragonese rural Gothic style. It has a single-nave Latin-cross plan, a façade and atrium in Plateresque style, and preserves a 16th-century altarpiece dedicated to San Miguel. As a collegiate church, it had its own ecclesiastical chapter which, according to 19th-century records, was made up of a parish priest bearing the title of rector and six canons.
Black truffle of the Somontano
Food and drink
The holm-oak scrub at the foot of the sierra de Guara yields winter black truffle from December to March, sought with a dog; it is used grated over eggs and potatoes or to flavor the comarca's oils and cured sausages.
