What to see and do in La Fueva

La Fueva
Village
La Fueva is an extensive rural municipality in Sobrarbe, in the province of Huesca, with 597 inhabitants spread across numerous scattered hamlets and an area of 218.85 km². Its capital, Tierrantona, sits at the mouth of the río Ussía into el La Nata, the main watercourse of the valle de la Fueva and a tributary of the Cinca. The extent of the valley and its gentle terrain made this comarca one of the most populated in the Pyrenees, though built up from small settlements and family holdings, many of which, now depopulated, still preserve their own churches or chapels. The municipality was created in 1999 from the union of Tierrantona and Fuendecampo. The relief includes pre-Pyrenean sierras such as the Sierra Ferrera and the embalses de Mediano y de El Grado, with altitudes ranging from 460 to 2,912 metres, at the pico Cotiella.
Historic Ensemble of Muro de Roda
Monument
The walled enclosure of Muro de Roda, with the hermitage of Santa Bárbara and the church of Santa María de la Asunción, forms a fortified religious-military ensemble declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. Muro Mayor was built around 1007-1017 by order of Sancho III el Mayor after the Christian conquest of the Sobrarbe, and its position at 1,007 m overlooked La Fueva and the Cinca communication route.
Festivities of la Fueva
Activity
Patron saint festivities of La Fueva.
Reservoir of Mediano
Nature
The Mediano reservoir lies within the municipal district of La Fueva, to which the village of Mediano was incorporated in 1974, its centre having been flooded by its waters. It is one of the largest reservoirs in Aragon, with a surface area of 1,714 hectares and a total capacity of 436.35 cubic hectometres. Its dam rests on the limestone rock of the El Entremón gorge, on the river Cinca, a few kilometres from the tail of the El Grado reservoir, which it regulates; its release allows electricity to be generated at an underground power station, operated first by ENHER and today by Acciona. It is managed by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro.
Submerged bell tower of Mediano
Curiosity
The tower rising above the waters of the Mediano reservoir, in La Fueva, is all that remains visible of the old village, flooded on 29 April 1969 after the dam was filled, construction of which had begun in 1929. It belonged to the church of the Asunción, a 16th-century building with a three-bay nave, with the date 1589 carved at the entrance to the sacristy, popularly known as the lady of the lake. The former residents were relocated to a new Mediano built next to the reservoir, though few accepted the move. When the water level drops, especially at the end of summer, the tower is exposed and becomes one of the most photographed images of Sobrarbe.
The flooding of the village of Mediano
Historical milestone
Three days of rain made the water rise, in April 1969, eighteen and a half meters with the bottom gates closed; the residents were evacuated with the water up to their knees and of the village only the church tower now shows.
