What to see and do in Santaliestra y San Quílez

Santaliestra y San Quílez
Village
Santaliestra y San Quílez is a municipality in Ribagorza, in the province of Huesca, at 561 metres of altitude by the Ésera river; its name comes from two hermitages around which two settlements grew, Santaliestra and La Cuadra de San Quílez. In 1018 it was reconquered by Sancho the Great, who left the lands in the hands of the brothers Riculfo and Arnaldo. It preserves the church of the Ascension of Our Lady, from the 14th century, and the hermitages of Piedad and San Saturnino. With 78 inhabitants (INE 2025) and Ribagorzan Aragonese speech, it is known for the lawsuit against the dam planned on the Ésera: the Audiencia Nacional annulled the project for lacking the required geotechnical reports, one of the great successes of the Aragonese anti-dam movement.
