What to see and do in Arén

Arén
Village
Arén, Areny de Noguera, is a municipality of Huesca with 309 inhabitants in the valley of the Noguera Ribagorzana river, bordering Catalonia. It belonged to the county of Ribagorza and was a military stronghold until the late 18th century, when the garrison was moved to Benasque; the War of the Spanish Succession left it destroyed and decimated. It preserves the remains of a 10th-century castle, a necropolis predating the 11th century, a church from the same period and the parish church of San Martín, baroque, from the 18th century, as well as megalithic constructions near Cornudella de Baliera. Within its territory lies the Arén dinosaur ichnite site, where bones found in layers from the end of the Cretaceous gave their name to two new hadrosaurs, Arenysaurus and Blasisaurus, which lived about 68 million years ago at the edge of the sea.
