What to see and do in San Esteban de Litera

San Esteban de Litera
Village
San Esteban de Litera is a municipality of La Litera, in Huesca, on the left bank of the river Cinca, at the southern end of the former county of Ribagorza, which belonged to the Dukes of Villahermosa until its disappearance. It has 570 inhabitants (INE 2021) over 71.90 square kilometres and comprises, besides the main settlement, that of Rocafort. Its name comes from the late Latin form Sancti Stephani, which gave Santistebe de Llitera in the local Ribagorzan dialect, and in Catalan Sant Esteve de Llitera; the second part refers to the comarca of La Litera, from the Latin lectuaria, because of the terrain, which rises like a bed from the two hundred metres of Binéfar to nearly a thousand at the castillo de la Mora. Beside its neoclassical parish church, it preserves an 11th-12th-century castle.
