What to see and do in Peralta de Calasanz

Peralta de Calasanz
Village
Peralta de Calasanz is a municipality of La Litera, in eastern Huesca province, formed in 1970 by the merger of Peralta de la Sal, Calasanz, Gabasa and Cuatrocorz, with its seat in Peralta de la Sal, beside the river Sosa. It is the birthplace of San José de Calasanz (1557-1648), founder of the Piarist Order: there the baptismal font in which he was baptised is preserved, in the temple of la Asunción, as is the house where he was born, today a shrine, along with a bronze monument. In Calasanz, on a hill, stands the Romanesque hermitage of San Bartolomé, built on the orders of Pedro I of Aragon in 1102, next to the 17th-century church of San Cipriano, with Mudejar plasterwork. Gabasa preserves the church of San Martín and the hermitage of Vilet. It has 206 inhabitants.
Castle of la Mora
Monument
A castle located about two kilometres south of Peralta de la Sal, in the municipality of Peralta de Calasanz, also known as the castle of Monmagastre after the village that grew up around it and which was abandoned in the late Middle Ages. Probably of Roman origin, it was reused by the Muslims as part of Lérida's line of defences against the county of Ribagorza, until Ermengol IV of Urgel conquered it in 1083; in the 15th century it passed into the hands of the Lanuza family. Remains of two walled enclosures survive: in the lower one, the base of two towers and a large cistern suggesting a sizeable garrison, and in the upper one, a 14th-century keep, the best-preserved part of the complex.
Festivities of Peralta de Calasanz
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Peralta de Calasanz in honour of San José de Calasanz, born in Peralta de la Sal in 1557 and founder of the Escuelas Pías; his birthplace is now a sanctuary and his baptismal font is kept in the church of la Asunción.
Festivities of invierno de Peralta de Calasanz
Activity
Peralta de Calasanz's winter festival is held in the municipality that in 1970 united the four depopulated villages of Peralta de la Sal, Calasanz, Gabasa and Cuatrocorz, taking the name of José de Calasanz, born in 1557 and founder of the Escuelas Pías, Europe's first network of free schooling for poor children.
Hermitage of Peralta de Calasanz
Monument
Hermitage in the municipal district of Peralta de Calasanz, a municipality whose salt pans of the ravine, with terraced ponds and declared a bien de interés cultural, supplied the region's pig slaughters for centuries.
The birth of Joseph of Calasanz
Historical milestone
In Peralta de la Sal, today part of the municipality of Peralta de Calasanz, José de Calasanz Gastón was born on the 11th of September 1557, a priest and educator who would found in Rome, on the 27th of November 1597, a free school for poor children — the first network of popular education in Europe —, which by 1618 was already attended by around 1,500 Roman children. He died in Rome in 1648 and in 1948 Pope Pius XII declared him universal patron of Christian schools; in Spain, Teachers' Day is celebrated on the 27th of November in his honour. His baptismal font is kept in the parish church of the Assumption in Peralta de la Sal, and his birthplace is today a shrine dedicated to his memory.
The union of the four villages of Peralta
Historical milestone
Peralta de la Sal, Calasanz, Gabasa and Cuatrocorz, four very depopulated settlements of the range, merged in 1970 into a single municipality that took the name of the saint born in the first of them.
Salt of Peralta de la Sal
Food and drink
The salt springs of the ravine feed salt pans of stepped basins, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, where the water evaporates in the sun; their salt supplied the comarca's pig slaughters for centuries.
