Sesa
Village
Sesa is a municipality in the province of Huesca, in the Hoya de Huesca, on the banks of the río Guatizalema, whose castle is documented between 1103 and 1104, when Peter I of Aragon handed it over to the cathedral of Huesca after resisting the Christian advance in the Somontano. The place has a pre-Roman origin, among the people who occupied the Chaves cave from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Neolithic and who formed the people of the Sesars, later Romanised; from that period coins of the first and second centuries BC are known, minted at its own mint. The castle stood on the crag that today gives its name to Castillo street, above the present-day church of San Juan. Its hermitage of la Jarea, a place name already documented as La Virgen del Camino, occupies a former mosque and holds a fifteenth-century alabaster carving of the Virgin.
