Piracés
Village
Piracés is a municipality in the Hoya de Huesca comarca, in Aragon, with 92 inhabitants (INE 2025), on broken ground between the Flumen and Guatizalema rivers, 18 km from Huesca. The Andalusi historian Al-Udrí described it in the early eleventh century as one of the fortresses protecting the medina of Wasqa, with a congregational mosque; it was conquered in 1103. It preserves the Piedra del Mediodía, an eighty-metre-long, twenty-five-metre-high sandstone block, a remnant of the tenth-to-eleventh-century castle. Its parish church of San Pedro, of ashlar masonry, was built in the second half of the sixteenth century and enlarged in the eighteenth, and the Romanesque hermitage of the Virgen de la Corona, from the late twelfth century, preserves a monolith dated 1505.
