What to see and do in Las Peñas de Riglos

Las Peñas de Riglos
Village
Las Peñas de Riglos is a municipality in the Hoya de Huesca comarca, formed in the 1960s by the grouping of several small municipalities of the natural comarca of the Galliguera. It has 263 inhabitants. It gives its name to the Mallos de Riglos, formed by cemented gravels that create giant, rounded vertical walls — among them El Puro, El Pisón and Castilla — which are a benchmark destination for climbers; a monolith commemorates Rabadá and Navarro, who died in 1963 on the north face of the Eiger. It also preserves the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Mallo, with two Romanesque images, and a small eleventh-century church, formerly the chapel of the vanished monastery of San Martín.
Mallos de Riglos
Nature
The Mallos de Riglos are a set of vertical conglomerate walls located in Riglos, in the municipality of Las Peñas de Riglos, about 45 kilometres northwest of Huesca. They reach a maximum height of 275 metres, on the north spur of the Pisón mallo, with large vertical and even overhanging walls, much prized for climbing. They were formed from Miocene conglomerates deposited in ancient alluvial fans of the Ebro depression, raised and fractured by the Pyrenean folding and sculpted by fluvial erosion, which opened up their ravines and chimneys. Each mallo has its own name, taken from houses in Riglos or from its shape or colour. In November 2016, together with those of Agüero and Peña Rueba, they were declared a natural monument by the Government of Aragon.
Cliffs of Riglos
Nature
The Mallos de Riglos are formations of reddish Miocene conglomerate, cemented by carbonates, raised by the alpine orogeny during the folding of the Pyrenees and later shaped by erosion, which has carved deep ravines and chimneys into the rock. They lie next to the town of Riglos, in the Huesca Pre-Pyrenees, about 45 km northwest of Huesca. The highest, the north spur of the Pisón, reaches 275 metres, and the Visera mallo holds Spain's largest climbing roof, with a 60-metre overhang. Vultures nest on its walls, giving their name to the site known as Paredón de los Buitres. A world climbing reference since 1935, it now offers routes of all levels, as well as via ferratas and base jumps.
Festivities of las Peñas de Riglos
Activity
The festivities of Las Peñas de Riglos are celebrated on the last weekend of August, although each settlement in the municipality keeps its own patronal festivity: Riglos honors the Virgen del Mallo (1 June) and San Sebastián (20 January), while Rasal, Triste and Ena celebrate the Virgen de Agosto (15 August), beneath the emblematic conglomerate walls of the Mallos.
