What to see and do in Ayerbe

Ayerbe
Village
Ayerbe is a town in the Hoya de Huesca, in the province of Huesca, where Santiago Ramón y Cajal spent his childhood, with 1050 inhabitants. It sits in an erosional depression on the left bank of the río Gállego, 28 kilometres from the capital, with a station on the railway line from Madrid to Jaca and Canfranc. The municipal territory, mostly dry farmland, is covered with holm oaks, almond trees, vines and olive trees, along with rosemary and gorse, and supports a varied fauna of rabbits, hares and partridges that attracts small-game hunting. The richness of its habitats, between sierras and valley floor, makes the Ayerbe comarca a notable place for observing day-flying butterflies, from papilionids such as the swallowtail or the Apollo to the small lycaenids and hesperiids.
Church of Ayerbe
Monument
Church of San Pedro, originally the church of the Dominican convent of Nuestra Señora del Remedio, founded in 1543, converted into a parish church on 11 April 1855; a building from several periods with a five-bay nave and a polygonal chapel, in neoclassical taste. It preserves a religious museum, a mid-19th-century organ, an 1866-1868 altarpiece by the sculptor Eugenio Serrano and the family pantheon of the Urriés.
Festivities of Ayerbe
Activity
Ayerbe celebrates its patronal festivities in honor of Santa Leticia on 9 September, with a fellowship dinner, a procession, giants and bigheads, marching bands and children's competitions. The town also celebrates the Voto a la Virgen de Casbas on the first Sunday of June.
The capture and resettlement of Ayerbe
Historical milestone
Sancho Ramírez conquered the stronghold and ordered it repopulated; Alfonso I later moved it to the plateau to the south and in 1366 Pedro IV donated it to Pedro Jordán de Urriés, the origin of the lordship that governed the town for centuries.
