What to see and do in Agüero

Agüero
Village
Agüero is a municipality in the Hoya de Huesca, with 142 inhabitants, which also includes the hamlet of San Felices. It sits on a hillock above the course of the río Gállego, already in the pre-Pyrenean mountains, overlooking a valley closed to the north by the Mallos de Agüero, reddish conglomerate rock formations very similar to the Mallos de Riglos, on the opposite bank of the Gállego. Its Christian conquest is placed in the year 921, under Sancho Garcés I of Pamplona, and from the 10th century onward it appears in royal grants to the monasteries of Leyre and Santa Cruz de la Serós. Sancho III the Great incorporated it as crown land in 1033; at the start of the 12th century, the widowed queen Berta ruled from Agüero the so-called “kingdom” of the Mallos, which also included Murillo, Marcuello, Riglos and Ayerbe.
Mallos de Agüero
Nature
The Mallos de Agüero are a sierra of slightly reddish-tinted conglomerates that closes off the village's valley to the north, with fanciful shapes very similar to the better-known Mallos de Riglos. They have been declared a Geological Interest Point of Aragon and are one of the places where climbing is practised in the area.
Castle of Marcuello
Monument
Castle located in Sarsamarcuello, one of the main ones of the Huesca Pre-Pyrenees, which formed a group with those of Murillo, Agüero, Ayerbe and Loarre, governed in the early 12th century by the widowed queen Berta. Facing the castle of Loarre, at 1,118 metres, it is documented since 1074 with Pedro Sánchez as tenant, and later had other lords until the early 15th century. Its inhabitants moved down to Sarsamarcuello and Linás de Marcuello, and it became uninhabited around 1610; by 1808 it was already described as being in ruins. The complex brings together the Romanesque hermitage of San Miguel, now in ruins, and the old parish church, converted into the hermitage of the Virgin of Marcuello, on the edge of a cliff. Of the keep, a square donjon 11 m to a side with five floors, remains of the north and west walls survive.
Festivities of Agüero
Activity
Agüero celebrates its patronal festivities in honor of San Roque on 16 August, with a six-day program that includes folk groups, theater and communal stew gatherings (calderetas) beneath the Mallos rock formations. In winter, on 3 February, it also celebrates the festivities of San Blas, also patron saint of the town.
