What to see and do in Biel

Biel
Village
Biel is a municipality and town of the Cinco Villas, in the province of Zaragoza, situated on the banks of the Arba de Biel river and at the foot of the sierra de Santo Domingo, whose heights, such as Fayar and Tres Obispos, mark the northern boundary of the municipal area. It includes the settlement of Fuencalderas and has 166 inhabitants. In the bed of the Arba and its ravines there are outcrops of copper minerals, with patches of malachite that between 1846 and 1959 prompted several, always unsuccessful, attempts at mining. One kilometre from the village lies the Peña 14 cave, excavated in 1999 and 2000, where remains were found dating human presence from 10,600 years ago until 5000 BC, when the cave was occupied by hunters who lived off what nature provided them.

Mountain range of Santo Domingo
Nature
The Sierra de Santo Domingo y Lucientes is a range of mountains and sheer crags in the Aragonese Pre-Pyrenees, stretching from the Cinco Villas, in the province of Zaragoza, to the province of Huesca. Oriented from west to east, it receives humid Atlantic currents, and its highest peak is Santo Domingo, at 1,520 metres, located within the municipal area of Longás. On 3 July 2009 the town councils of Longás, Biel and Luesia asked the Government of Aragón to declare it a protected landscape, with the support of the Comarca de las Cinco Villas; if accepted, the protected area would reach 13,560.62 hectares, the first in the comarca to obtain this status.
