What to see and do in Candasnos

Candasnos
Village
Candasnos is a municipality in the Bajo Cinca comarca, in the province of Huesca, with 478 inhabitants, located in the steppe transition between the fertile floodplain of the Cinca river and the arid zone of Los Monegros, northwest of the Mequinenza reservoir. It belonged for centuries to the monastery of Sijena, which received it as a donation from Alfonso II of Aragon in 1188 and organised its resettlement in 1217, granting the territory to 37 settlers in exchange for an annual tribute. It still preserves the balsa buena, a pond built by the Romans that continues to supply the village with water in times of drought. It also keeps alive the shepherds' recipe of migas de pastor, crumbled bread sautéed with garlic, oil and bacon, served with longaniza or grapes.

The festive calendar includes 25 April, in honour of San Marcos, and the August festivities, dedicated to the Virgen de la Asunción on the 15th and to San Roque on the 16th, coinciding with the dedication of the village parish, which is also dedicated to the Assumption.

Dryland shepherd's migas
Food and drink
On the dry plains that link with Monegros the recipe for migas is preserved: stale bread crumbled and moistened, sautéed with garlic, oil and bacon, served with longaniza or with grapes. It was the shepherds' food and today it is a restaurant starter.
