What to see and do in Bujaraloz

Bujaraloz
Village
Bujaraloz, whose name comes from the Arabic Burx al-arús ('tower of the bride'), sits in the very heart of the Monegros steppe, in a flat and arid territory dotted with lagoons that holds Spain's largest eastern breeding population of great bustards, along with little bustards, stone-curlews, sandgrouse and birds of prey such as the golden eagle or the griffon vulture. After the military uprising of 18 July 1936, when the villages of Monegros were split between the two sides, Bujaraloz hosted on 25 July the headquarters of the Durruti Column, and on the following 6 October the assembly of 174 delegates from 139 villages that gave rise to the Regional Defence Council of Aragon, dissolved in August 1937. The municipality, crossed by the AP-2 motorway, today has 938 inhabitants.
Steppes of Los Monegros
Nature
The steppes of Los Monegros cover a large part of this Aragonese comarca of 2,764.4 km², shared between Zaragoza and Huesca, with a semi-arid climate, chronic droughts, very hot summers and below-zero winters: one of the most arid areas in Spain. Steppe vegetation spreads over the uncultivated land. The 1999 scientific Manifesto described it as a singular, mature ecosystem, unique in Europe, with more than 5,400 documented biological species and the highest rate of taxonomic novelties on the continent, and called for it to be declared a protected area.
Church of Bujaraloz
Monument
Church of Santiago el Mayor, restored in the 16th century although it is thought to originate from a 12th-century structure.
Riverside woodlands and salt lagoons of Bujaraloz
Nature
Area of endorheic salt lagoons characteristic of the steppe landscape of Los Monegros. Historically, the population of Bujaraloz extracted salt from these numerous lagoons scattered across the municipal area to trade with it.
Festivities of Bujaraloz
Activity
The patronal festivities of Bujaraloz are celebrated from 27 August to 1 September in honor of San Agustín, with the traditional sung wake-up calls (despertadores), bands, water games and the sartenada (frying-pan) contest.
Regional Defense Council of Aragon
Historical milestone
The Durruti Column set up its headquarters in Bujaraloz on 25 July 1936, and on 6 October an assembly of 174 delegates from 139 Aragonese villages met there, giving rise to the Regional Defence Council of Aragon. The body, first legalised and then outlawed by the Second Republic, came to govern the eastern half of Aragon as a virtually independent state, the region's first autonomous government since 1707; its economy rested on agrarian collectives, which controlled prices and prevented inflation. It was born made up solely of CNT anarchists and from December 1936 brought together all the anti-fascist forces of the Popular Front, until the Republican authorities, under communist influence, dissolved it in August 1937.
Madalenas and bakeries of Bujaraloz
Food and drink
Bujaraloz preserves a deep-rooted baking tradition with ovens in operation. Its madalenas, of spongy dough and lemon aroma, are sold throughout the comarca and in Zaragoza. The locality historically supplied bread to the villages of the steppe surroundings.
Black truffle of the Monegros plains
Food and drink
Tuber melanosporum is harvested in winter in holm oak woods and in truffle plantations established in recent decades around Bujaraloz. Aragon is the leading producing region in Spain and the truffle has been incorporated into the menus of the comarca.
