What to see and do in Grado

Grado
Village
Grado, in Asturian Grau, is a concejo and town in the comarca of Oviedo, its capital 27 kilometres from the city, on the floodplain of the Nalón river, which separates it from Candamo and Las Regueras. It is a town of around 9,680 inhabitants whose market, documented since 1256, is the oldest in Asturias and is still held every Wednesday and Sunday, with afuega'l pitu as the star product of the stalls. The Camino Primitivo enters the concejo via the Peñaflor bridge, a narrow passage where, according to tradition, the militiamen of Grau ambushed French troops during the Peninsular War, making their bullets whistle like big flies, a nickname its residents have carried ever since and which appears on the crest of the Club Deportivo Mosconia.

Activity
Documented since 1256, it is the oldest market in Asturias and is still set up on Wednesdays and Sundays in the town's squares, with vegetables, cheeses, poultry, honey and basketwork brought in from the surrounding valleys.
Palace of Miranda-Valdecarzana
Monument
The Palacio de Miranda-Valdecarzana stands in the centre of Grado, a palace-house of medieval origin remodelled in the 18th century that forms, together with the Baroque chapel of los Dolores, the town's monumental ensemble. Its ashlar facade bearing the arms of the Miranda family presides over the historic centre. It is a three-storey building with the entrance at the centre of the facade, leading to a monumental staircase and a courtyard with octagonal columns around which the rooms are arranged. The Miranda family enlarged it in Baroque style at the end of the 17th century, by then holding the title of Marquises of Valdecarzana, and between 1713 and 1716 the eastern facade was built beside the chapel of los Dolores. Today it houses the Public Library of Grado.
