Yew tree of Bermiego Nature · Quirós, Oviedo, Asturias The yew of Bermiego, or Teixu l'Iglesia, is a thousand-year-old tree of the species Taxus baccata that grows within the grounds of the church of Santa María, in the village of Bermiego, on the western slope of the sierra del Aramo, within the concejo of Quirós. Although its exact age is unknown for lack of studies, it is believed it may be a thousand years old. It has a crown 15 metres across, is ten metres tall and has a trunk with a girth of between 6.5 and 7 metres. It was declared a natural monument on 27 April 1995 and is protected under the Asturian natural resources plan; because of the sensitivity of its roots to soil compaction, the perimeter of the crown has been fenced off to prevent visitors from trampling it.
